Emily Cranston Receives LeSueur Memorial Award
CHBE Associate Professor, Emily Cranston, has received the LeSueur Memorial Award from the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) , which was awarded virtually during the Annual SCI Canada Awards Dinner on May 5, 2022. Dr. Cranston received the award, which is given to an individual for the development of technical excellence, for adopting “an innovative approach to address complex technical challenges. CHBE post-doc wins $1M Milestone Award from Elon Musk’s funded XPRIZE Competition
Takachar, a UBC spin-off company co-founded by CHBE postdoc, Kevin Kung, has won a $1 million Milestone Award in the XPRIZE Carbon Removal Competition, funded by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation. Dr. Kung, who works as president and chief technical officer of Takachar, and his partner Vidyut Mohan (co-founder and CEO), were previously awarded $250,000 in the Carbon Dioxide Removal Demonstration student category of the XPrize as well as a $£1 million Earthshot Prize in November 2021. CHBE Welcomes Mona Rahmani
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering would like to welcome Dr. Mona Rahmani. Dr. Rahmani holds a PhD degree from the University of British Columbia in Environmental Fluid Mechanics, where she studied shear instabilities and mixing in density stratified flows. Her research interests are in the fields of multiphase flows and density stratified flows with applications in renewable energy, biomaterials and sustainability. Dr. Rahmani held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Turbulence Research at Stanford University where she studied turbulent particle laden flows in particle solar receivers, and a previous postdoctoral fellowship at IFP Energies Nouvelles where she studied […]
ChemECar Wins Pacific Northwest Regional Competition
UBC’s ChemECar team placed first in both the ChemECar performance and poster competitions at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Pacific Northwest (PNW) Student Regional ChemECar Competition held virtually on April 30. They competed against teams from the University of Calgary and Washington State University. The UBC team entered two cars, Catch me if you Chem and KaCHBE. Catch me if you Chem won the performance competition, earning them a spot to advance to the AIChE national competition to be held in November in Phoenix. Jonathan Verrett Receives Killam Teaching Award
Jonathan Verrett, Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been awarded a Killam Teaching Award for 2021/2022. Dr. Verrett’s current scholarly work focuses on leadership development, experiential learning, design education, Open Educational Resources (OER), energy generation and use as well as sustainability. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering would like to give a warm welcome to Dr. Zeina Baalbaki, who is joining the departments as a lecturer to teach within and help oversee the undergraduate degree program in Environmental Engineering at UBC. Dr. Zeina Baalbaki earned her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from McGill University in 2016.
