Dr. Wilkinson and research group present to the German President during his visit on April 25

The University of British Columbia hosted Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, as part of his first official visit to Canada on April 25, 2023.  President Steinmeier toured UBC Faculty of Applied Science’s soon-to-open hydrogen research platform and met researchers working on clean energy and climate change solutions, including engineering experts collaborating with German research institutions.  A research group led by Dr. David Wilkinson, Canada Research Chair in clean energy and electrochemical technologies, presented their research project to President Steinmeier. Dr. Yankai Cao’s research project awarded funding through New Frontiers in Research Fund

Congratulations to Dr. Yankai Cao for being one of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science-affiliated members who was awarded over $3.7 million for their research projects through the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). The NFRF supports world-leading interdisciplinary, transformative and rapid-response Canadian-led research.  The NFRF Exploration stream’s objective is to “support high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research.” Applied Science researchers awarded funding in this stream are leading work to reduce barriers for human-robot collaboration in construction sites, co-create virtual realities with patients, families and key decision-makers to achieve inclusivity, and accelerate transformative public sector innovation toward social and ecological justice, among others. UBC wins ChemEcar and Oral Presentation Competition

UBC students have won both the ChemEcar competition and Oral Presentation competition at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Pacific Northwest (PNW) student conference at Oregon State University held April 14 and 15, 2023. The ChemEcar team submitted two cars, Super Blueper and Keep Your Ion the Prize. Super Blueper won both the ChemEcar performance competition and poster competition. Keep your Ion the Prize won the most creative car prize as well as a third place poster prize. The University of British Columbia has made a move up the list of QS World University Rankings by the subject of Engineering & Technology. The recently-released rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds, a leading global education network, saw UBC jump to 33rd in the world, up 3 spots from last year.
