Prof Martinez named Canadian Academy of Engineering Fellow

Dr. Mark Martinez, professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at UBC, is among 55 new Fellows elected to the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Dr. Tony Yang, from the Civil Engineering Department, was also among the newly elected Fellows, who were selected for “their outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada and around the world and for their service as role models in their fields and to their communities.”


The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which individuals, who have made outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada, provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada and to Canadians.


The nomination and election of individuals as Fellows of the CAE are based on their remarkable accomplishments and lifelong dedication, as recognized by their colleagues. These esteemed individuals are devoted to utilizing Canada’s engineering knowledge and background for the betterment of the entire Canadian population.


Dr. Martinez’s exceptional achievements have greatly influenced the pulp and paper industry, which stands as one of Canada’s most significant manufacturing sectors. Through his research, he has advanced operational techniques in papermaking and co-developed numerous innovative products and processes. Additionally, he has provided extensive education to numerous engineers at the post-graduate level and shared his expertise through university instruction and industry courses. Furthermore, as a director of various university-industry initiatives, he has played a pivotal role in both the established traditional industry and the emerging bio-products sector. Dr. Martinez’s remarkable accomplishments have played a crucial part in fortifying Canada’s essential pulp and paper industry.


The induction ceremony for new Fellows is scheduled for June 20 in Victoria, BC.
