At the 2023 Applied Science Celebration, UBC will honour seven inspiring members of the Applied Science community for their remarkable contributions. Among the individuals recognized are two CHBE alumni: Patrick Daniel and Jacob Masliyah, who are receiving the Applied Science Dean’s Medal of Distinction.

Patrick Daniel, former CEO of Enbridge Inc., played a pivotal role in the expansion of Enbridge into renewable energy sources during his tenure. Patrick was also inducted in the CHBE Hall of Fame earlier this year in recognition of his efforts to advance the discipline of chemical engineering and to recognize his exceptional service to UBC and to the CHBE department and its students and alumni.

Jacob Masliyah, received his Ph.D from the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. Norman Epstein. He has been a professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta since 1977, his research includes topics ranging from fluid mechanics to fluid-particle dynamics and of colloidal and interfacial phenomena. Dr. Masliyah received many accolades throughout his career including his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
