Dr. Gabriel Potvin, an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at UBC, was recently named a Fellow of the Canadian Engineering Education Association – Association Canadienne d’Éducation en Génie (CEEA-ACÉG) at their national conference.
This designation honours individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service and contributions to engineering and design education in Canada and for their work with the Association.
Dr. Potvin’s work focuses on problem-based learning, laboratory instruction, interdisciplinary education, and sustainability education, all in the context of training modern engineers equipped to be leaders in rapidly-changing industries and capable of tackling the daunting transdisciplinary challenges facing society. He is also the Academic Director of the Academic Essentials orientation program at UBC, and sits on the Board of Directors of the CEEA-ACÉG. He is a steadfast advocate of science and engineering outreach, and encourages engineers to be more involved with the general public and serve as ambassadors to their fields.
He has won numerous other awards for his work in engineering education, teaching excellence, and educational leadership, including the inaugural Chemical and Biological Engineering Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award in 2022, the 2021 UBC Killam Teaching Award, and the prestigious Ron Britton Engineering Education Vanguard national award in 2019.
