CHBE Student Wins CSChE 2023 Best Poster Presentation

Kanageswari Singaraveloo holding award at the conference

Congratulations to CHBE Ph.D. student, Kanageswari Singaraveloo, who won the Best Poster Presentation in the Energy Division of the 2023 Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Calgary!

Kanageswari’s poster, titled “Mild Thermal Treatment of Woody Biomass to Produce Binderless Carbonized Pellets“, presented research focused on the development of durable binderless biochar pellets by investigating the effects of carbonization temperature, time, and biomass particle size. This research is part of UBC’s Biomass and Bioenergy Research Group (BBRG) that focuses on turning raw biomass into industrial feedstock for the production of sustainable environmentally friendly biofuel, bioproducts and other industrial applications.

Kanageswari graduated with a degree in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Malaysia and subsequently gained four years of industry experience as a Process Engineer in the semiconductor sector. Her passion for the environment led her to join the BBRG, a world-class research group made up of engineers and scientists, led by Dr. Shahab Sokhasansanj, focused on bridging the gap between the raw biomass source and biomass conversion.
