Speaker Bio Dr. Dixit is currently a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley, where he manages the Department of Defense funded projects focused on cleaning up sites contaminated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals.” These pollutants are found at military and airport sites across North America and are […]
Distinguished Speaker Seminar September 19, 2025: Kelly Sanders
From Climate Risk to Resilience: Quantitative Insights at the Intersection of Energy, Water, and Public Health Date and Time: September 19, 2025 | 1 p.m. PST Location: CHBE 102 Refreshments will be served at 12:50pm Abstract Climate-driven extreme events place escalating and uneven pressure on the critical systems we rely on to deliver electricity, clean water, and public health protections. Vulnerabilities from prolonged drought, extreme heat, and wildfires vary widely across space, time, and populations—shaped by interactions between physical infrastructure, environmental conditions, and social, economic, and biological determinants. Fortifying these interconnected systems requires analytical frameworks that advance our quantitative understanding of […]
CHBE Meet and Greet: Sept 23
First-year engineering students and current CHBE students are invited to the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering’s Meet and Greet on Tuesday, September 23rd from 5:45 to 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time in the CHBE Atrium. During this event: 1st Year Engineering Students: Are you interested in meaningful hands-on experience in research or industry-sponsored projects? Then the CHBE Research Scholar or CHBE Industrial Scholar streams may be for you. These unique opportunities, which are integrated into 2nd year CHBE courses, are specifically designed to provide select 2nd year CHBE students the chance to be mentored by either a research supervisor or industry expert. An optional info session about these opportunities will be […]
Dr. Eric Lees, Dr. Elod Gyenge and Marina Mehling Awarded 2025 Peter Wall Legacy Award
We are excited to announce the CHBE recipients of the 2025 Wall Fellowships and Wall Research Awards. Research Awards of $200,000 each were granted to Dr. Eric Lees (lead PI) and Dr. Elod Gyenge for their project titled “Upcycling Agricultural Wastewater from the Fraser Valley into Fertilizer Using Renewable Electricity.” A Research Award of $30,000–$60,000 was granted to Marina Mehling, a CHBE PhD student. Each year, these prestigious UBC awards provide approximately $4 million to advance innovative faculty and student research addressing major sustainability challenges in British Columbia and around the world. The Wall Legacy Awards are made possible by an […]
Capstone Awards 2024W
Congratulations to all CHBE students for completing their Capstone projects this year! You all should be extremely proud of the work that you produced. The undergraduate programs culminate in a significant student design experience delivered through a Capstone Design course. Students carry out the design and economic assessment of a major, environmentally-sound process in chemical and/or biological engineering. Students work in teams under the supervision of a faculty advisor and, when possible, mentored by a practicing professional engineering from industry to ensure relevance and quality. Annually, the department allocates capstone awards to distinguished projects. These are assigned by the CHBE Faculty, […]
Volunteer for the CHBE Vancouver Summer Program
The Vancouver Summer Program (VSP) was created to allow international students to experience life at a Canadian university. Running from July 14th to August 8th, the program provides students with courses that display the fundamentals of Chemical and Chemical & Biological Engineering while showing the best UBC and Vancouver has to offer. We also plan different events that allow students to create friendships and enjoy their time here. We are asking volunteers for help during these events, you will gain experience with event management and learn about different cultures and people, but most importantly you’ll have fun. Thank you for considering […]
2025 Winter Session Registration Instructions

For students not […]
Daniel Gonzalez on Finding Opportunities through the COOP Program
Daniel Gonzalez is a 2025 graduate from the Chemical Engineering undergraduate program at UBC. During his time at UBC, Daniel took part in the COOP program, was a member of the Junior Varsity Baseball team and participated in intramural sports. We reached out to Daniel to ask him about his experience in the Chemical and Biological Engineering department and his time at UBC. What made you choose CHBE at UBC? Coming out of first year, I wasn’t entirely sure which path in engineering to take. I was in between mechanical, chemical, and biomedical. Compared to mechanical engineering, which focuses on the design […]
Clean Energy Research Centre Seminar June 13th: Dr. Chris Greig
Title: To achieve net-zero, we must confront three systemic failures Date and Time: June 13th, 2025 at 11am Location: CHBE 202 Speaker: Dr. Chris Greig, Senior Research Scientist at the Andlinger Center for Energy andthe Environment, at Princeton University Abstract: In recent years, most nations and numerous major corporations have pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century. However, many of these commitments lack detailed and actionable implementation plans, often leaning heavily on sectoral, national, and global deep decarbonization pathways produced by integrated assessment and other large-scale models. These models, while influential among policymakers, investors, and NGOs, fail to capture three critical […]
