Benjamin Steszyn wins silver at CSChE 2025 for his work on enhancing student team collaboration

Benjamin Steszyn wins silver at CSChE 2025 for his work on enhancing student team collaboration

We are excited to share that Benjamin Steszyn, a fourth-year Environmental Engineering undergraduate student, has received 2nd place (silver) in the Reg Friesen Student Oral Paper Competition at the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) 2025 Annual conference in Montreal. The competition encourages students to present on non-technical papers topics such as critical evaluation of their educational experiences or innovative learning or teaching strategies. Benjamin presented research-based instructional materials he developed, including lectures and activities, to improve student team collaboration in third-year design courses. Benjamin’s work was part of a Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) project focused on improving professional […]

How the Nano World Shapes the Future of Sustainable Energy: Insights from Microscopy, Quantification, and AI Date and Time: October 24, 2025 | 1 p.m. PST Location: CHBE 102 Refreshments will be served at 12:50 p.m. Abstract The global transition to sustainable energy is accelerating, reshaping economies and supply chains worldwide. Yet this shift comes with geopolitical uncertainties, resource constraints, and competitive pressures that make resilience and scale-up as critical as efficiency. Meeting global demand requires not only deploying technologies at unprecedented scales, but also ensuring their efficiency, durability, affordability, and independence from fragile supply lines. Here, materials science and accelerated […]
Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Fuhar Dixit

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Fuhar Dixit

Meet Dr. Fuhar Dixit, who earned his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering in 2023 at UBC. We caught up with Dr. Dixit to ask him about his exciting career and the path that led him there. Professional Role I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley, where I manage the Department of Defense funded projects focused on cleaning up sites contaminated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals.” These pollutants are found at military and airport sites across North America and are extremely difficult to measure with current analytical methods. My work focuses on understanding how these […]

UBC Design Team Places First Internationally at WEFTEC

Team StormWise Innovations, a group of five Environmental Engineering students from UBC, has won first place on the international stage at the 2025 Student Design Competition during the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) in Chicago, IL. The team members are Jaden Gauw, Jaden Mah, Kajal Mishra, Cindy Chow and Megan Slot and are led by UBC faculty advisor Dr. Zeina Baalbaki. After placing first at the British Columbia Water and Wastewater Association (BCWWA) student design competition earlier this year, the team went on to represent both The University of British Columbia and Canada at WEFTEC with support from BCWWA.  […]

My Journey in Energy Research: Translating Fundamentals into Innovations and Commercial Outcomes Date and Time: October 10, 2025 | 1 p.m. PT Location: CHBE 102 Refreshments will be served at 12:50pm Abstract Over the past two decades, my research program has followed a trajectory that highlights how fundamental science can spark innovation and ultimately generate applied and commercial outcomes. Beginning with work on the physics and chemistry of heavy oil and oil sands, including multiphase flow, viscosity reduction, and the thermodynamics of recovery processes, we laid a foundation for a fundamental understanding that enabled new strategies for efficient extraction and upgrading.
