Nomi Danzig, who completed her Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering in May 2025, has been awarded a Governor General’s Silver Medal.
Nomi arrived at UBC in 2020 as the Toronto District School Board’s top scholar. In each of her years of study in the chemical and biological engineering program, she was at the top of her cohort, achieving a grade of 100% in a remarkable 10 courses. Her interest in sustainable engineering and biotechnologies led to co-op terms at STEMCELL Technologies and AGEIAS (Ah-Gee-Iss) Engineering Systems. As an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Vikram Yadav’s lab, Nomi was notably meticulous and well-organized, possessing an innate ability to analyze complex concepts.
As co-captain of the UBC BioT design team, Nomi acted as a leader and mentor for her teammates as they explored innovative techniques in beer brewing. She is also involved with Blank Vinyl Project, a student-run organization that supports emerging musicians on- and off-campus.
In her courses, Nomi enjoyed learning about the possibilities for more sustainable materials and relished the opportunity to learn processes from beginning to end. After graduation, Nomi will start an internship at Anodyne Chemistries, working with enzymes to convert carbon dioxide into chemicals. She cites the nature on campus as one the best parts of studying at UBC, and notes that the friends she has made here have made a significant impact on her experience.
