In recognition of his accomplishments in chemical engineering and other engineering disciplines, university leadership, and internationalization. Dr. Meisen’s contributions include the creation of the UBC Pulp and Paper Centre, cooperative education in Engineering at UBC, the Washington Accord for the mutual recognition of engineering accreditation, the Process Engineering program and Oil & Gas Development Partnership at Memorial University, and advanced foresight methodologies. Applications of the latter include the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from major industries, the production of carbon fibres from asphaltenes, the Global North, and the Future of Communities. His research on amine absorbents, conducted with graduate students at UBC, has become particularly important for the industrial-scale removal of carbon dioxide.
