Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Fuhar Dixit
Meet Dr. Fuhar Dixit, who earned his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering in 2023 at UBC. We caught up with Dr. Dixit to ask him about his exciting career and the path that led him there. Professional Role I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley, where I manage the Department of Defense funded projects focused on cleaning up sites contaminated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals.” These pollutants are found at military and airport sites across North America and are extremely difficult to measure with current analytical methods. My work focuses on understanding how these […]
Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Jason Kwan
Meet Dr. Jason Kwan, who earned his B.A.Sc in Chemical Engineering (with distinction and co-op standing) in 2010 and his Ph.D in Chemical and Biological Engineering in 2019, at UBC. We caught up with Dr. Kwan to ask him about his exciting career and the path that led him there. Professional Experience I have about 9 years of industrial work experience primarily in R&D electrochemical engineer roles in a broad range of applications including fuel cells, azide electrolysis, CO2 electrolysis and PEM water electrolysis. I am currently a Senior Electrolyzer Engineer with the Institute of Carbon Management (ICM) at the University […]
William Chen Wins Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
William Chen, a second-year PhD student in Dr. Madjid Mohseni’s research group in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been awarded a 2022/23 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award! UBC is one of the six Killam institutions and yearly awards faculty and teaching assistants who demonstrate excellence in teaching. The Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to individuals who “exhibit skills, abilities and contributions that result in a high level of respect from undergraduate students and supervisors”. Through his work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in chemical, biological and environmental engineering courses, William has demonstrated his commitment to teaching […]

Jasmeen Kaur Receives MANA Best Poster Award
Jasmeen Kaur, CHBE Postdoctoral fellow, has received the best poster award and travel grant at the Metabolomics Association of North America’s (MANA) 4th annual conference in Edmonton. Dr. Kaur received the award for her poster “Metabolic profiling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the Corpse plant using GC×GC-TOF MS”, research carried out in Dr. Jane Hill’s Research Lab. The Best Poster award is a competitive award for competitors who clearly and enthusiastically describes the scientific merit of their research. Awards are based on effective visual and oral presentation, quality of research, and depth of understanding. Dr. Kaur’s research in the […]
Ibrahim Yousef wins DYCOPS 2022 Young Author Award
CHBE Graduate Student, Ibrahim Yousef, received the DYCOPS 2022 Young Author Award at the 13th International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Symposium on Dynamics and Control of Process Systems, including Biosystems. The official announcement of the award was made during the conference banquet in Busan. The symposium “provides a forum for professionals, theorists, researchers, engineers, and students involved in the broad field of process control engineering to integrate and exchange their knowledge, experience, results, and ideas in diverse areas of dynamics and control of process systems, and to explore latest theoretical developments as well as control applications in various industries.” The […]
Four Year Doctoral Fellowship – Alec Jameson
Alec Jameson graduated with an MASc from Queen’s University in June 2018, and began a doctoral program in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at UBC the following September under the supervisor of Dr. Előd Gyenge. His research focuses on electrochemical engineering, electrocatalysis, and energy engineering. Alec’s research goals are to combine aspects of chemistry and chemical engineering to provide cleaner energy for the planet. At present, his research focuses on identifying new durable, cost-effective electrocatalysts to increase the performance of flow batteries for application in large-scale stationary energy storage, and later on for integration into renewable energy sources such as […]
